You know that fresh, just-deep-cleansed-my-face feeling? Your pores are truly clean and you can feel the entirety of wind brushing gently across your face? Well, your vagina can feel that way too! Ladies, if you have not or have yet to try a vaginal steam, keep reading. Guys, you can keep reading too *wink wink*
A life-changing introduction to yoni steams and women's wellness
Strolling the library as a knowledge-hungry 16-year-old girl, the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility stuck out in the aisle.
It appealed to me for two reasons: 1) I could have control over something else in my life besides studies! and 2) going through a spiritual awakening at that time in my life, I was yearning to connect more with myself and this book resonated with me. As I was reading, I became upset and wondered why this vital information wasn't being taught in school.
But why should I get upset? I have a mouth of my own! So I began telling family and friends about the natural, "alternative" approach to the woman's reproductive system. As the medical society was shifting towards conventional practices during the early 1900's in the US, the collective view of the woman's body changed. Menstruation cycles, birth, and sex were not openly discussed due to a dominating conservative society at the time. And sadly, all three of those topics were deemed a horrific experience. So instead of celebrating, harnessing, and reinforcing the sacred vessel a woman's body is, it was confusing, complicated, and often degraded.
Fast forward to 2018 and the polarities between masculine and feminine are balancing as society is embracing more Yin.
Yoni steaming is an ancient practice spanning all cultures
In Sanskrit, yoni means "the source of all life" or "sacred space," which is the essence of the woman's reproductive system. It's a marvelous miracle what the woman's body can bear and endure. Spas are now offering V-Steaming services. However, you may do this in the comfort of your home.
Yoni steaming will change your life by restoring your reproductive system
According to collective experience's from women, vaginal steaming may:
Detox the womb and body of toxins (be cautious of the materials in conventional menstrual products!)
Alleviate PMS symptoms (bloating, exhaustion, pain) and menopause symptoms (vaginal dryness)
Relieve vaginal infections
Regulate an absent or irregular period
Decrease menstrual flow
Aid with toning and healing of the reproductive system (postpartum, post-birth scarring)
Reduce cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, uterine issues
Prep for the steam
Heat water in a pot to a rolling boil.
Add herbs and allow to sit for five to 10 minutes.
While it's steeping it's also cooling so you don't burn yourself (ouch!).
Prepare your space as you wait for the water to cool. Not only is it in the comfort of your home, but you also get to set the tone of the atmosphere for your yoni steam. You may light a few candles, energetically clear the space with incense/burning herbs/crystals, bring a book if you'd like, and play music. This practice may be followed after a relaxing bath.
Transfer the warm healing water into a glass bowl if you prefer or into a yoni seat if necessary. Adjust your seating so you are as comfortable as possible (you'll be sitting for a while).
Bring a robe or towel to surround yourself with to prevent the steam from escaping.
To receive the benefits of the precious herbs, you'll need to steam for a minimum of 15 minutes. You may steam for as long as 45 minutes or for however long the water remains warm. Personally, during this time I meditate, either on my own or following a guided meditation. Listen to your body and it will guide you as to what you need to do spiritually. When you're finished, give thanks and return the herbal water back to Mother Earth.
A breath of fresh...steam?
This practice stimulates a restoration process not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well. Have you tried a yoni steam before? Feel free to share your experience with a yoni steam down below in the comments!. Here's a rundown of what's in Asili Herbs & Botanica:

~ Known as the "female ginseng", dong quai is a tonic commonly used in TCM to assist with menopause symptoms, cramps, absent periods, and anemia. This herb also supports bone health, which is crucial in the later years of a woman. Dong quai stimulates collagen synthesis and protein secretion, thus improving bone tissue. ~ Ashwagandha, an aphrodisiac, increases blood flow to the genitals, thus improving sexual satisfaction. Since its an adaptogenic herb, ashwagandha creates a fertile environment in the womb by decreasing cortisol levels, which is one of the main reasons for infertility ~ Also known as the "Queen of the Herbs", Shatavari is known to rejuvenate the woman's reproductive system. As a tonic, it balances hormones and boosts libido. Beneficial throughout all stages of womanhood, this herb relieves vaginal dryness and increases mucus supply ~ One of the holy grail and widely used herbs for women's wellness, vitex/chaste berry is rich in flavonoids, anti-inflammatory compounds, and essential oils that together effectively assist with managing PMS symptoms, soothing endometrial tissue, and contain anticancer and antiviral properties.
*Caution: due to properties in these herbs that contain phytoestrogens and increase dopamine levels, avoid use if you're sensitive to estrogen, taking birth control, breastfeeding or pregnant, or taking medication that affects dopamine.
